Coughing or Sneezing Incorrectly Can Make Your Diastasis Grow Larger

We at Diastasis Rehab want to make sure you are coughing and sneezing correctly to protect your abdominals!

Coughing or Sneezing incorrectly can put great force on your weak connective tissue making your diastasis larger and or reversing the work being done to correct your diastasis. It takes work and dedication to close a diastasis, and all it takes is one forceful action to undo many weeks’ worth of rehabilitation.

When feeling the urge to cough, start with a belly breath so your abdominals are in the right starting position (out) to then be (in) at 5th floor or your inner spine when you cough.  It is much harder to prepare for a sneeze.  If you can, start with a belly breath. If you can’t, just make sure you bring your transverse muscle to 5th floor while sneezing.

Coughing or sneezing without engaging your transverse causes your abdomen to extend, putting pressure on your organs and your connective tissue. Using the transverse at 5th floor when coughing or sneezing keeps the abdomen from extending, minimizing the force put on your connective tissue.
