Healing Diastasis Recti with the 4 Step Tupler Technique®

The 4 Step Tupler Technique® approach continues to be the missing link in healing Diastasis Recti. When I first started researching and subsequently teaching the Tupler Technique® back in 2011, I had been a certified personal fitness trainer specializing in prenatal and postnatal fitness for more than 5 years. Prior to my certification, there was little information about the cause of and treatment for diastasis recti. There was also practically no information or education for trainers or the general public about how to work out properly when you had this condition.

My Journey & Initial Challenges

After having my 3rd child in 2010, I began to seek information locally on how to successfully heal Diastasis Recti. Every fitness professional, doctor, or expert I spoke to said that while some core exercises might help, the only true solution was invasive abdominal surgery. As someone who firmly believes that surgery should always be a last resort, I found it extremely frustrating that no local expert specialized in treating Diastasis Recti. I invested significant time and money in Pilates, yoga, and bar-based classes and attempted what I believed were proper core exercises—crunches, inversions, oblique work, and planks—but my core strength continued to elude me while my belly size and lower back pain worsened.

Discovery of the Tupler Technique®

Thankfully, in early 2011, I discovered the research-based Tupler Technique® program. I reached out to Julie Tupler, who was visiting San Francisco for a conference, and we arranged to meet in person. From that moment, I knew her groundbreaking program was life-changing. Unlike many other programs, the Tupler Technique® includes a daily protocol and a straightforward 4-step approach that truly targets healing the core muscular system and Diastasis Recti. I finally discovered the missing link to healing my Diastasis Recti!

The 4 Step Approach

After my introduction to the Tupler Technique®, I quickly became a certified provider. For the past 14 years, I have been teaching and using the technique in my own fitness routine and as the foundation for my clients’ core rehabilitation. Many practitioners understand Diastasis Recti, yet the treatment protocol often remains vague or conflicting. Most of my clients have attempted various fitness or medical approaches, only to find themselves stuck because they overlooked at least one of the critical steps. The four steps are:

  • Performing the foundational and therapeutic Tupler Technique® Exercises correctly
  • Splinting to reposition your muscles and allow the connective tissue to heal
  • Developing awareness of your Transverse Abdominis Muscle by engaging it in all activities of daily living
  • Getting up and down from a seated and back-lying position correctly

Every single step is extremely important. Once we start the program, my clients immediately begin to regain the neuromuscular connection to their core muscles, which is essential for healing Diastasis Recti.

I am Cheryl Bjornson, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I have been a Tupler Technique® provider since 2011. With my background as a former collegiate athlete and over 20 years as a NASM certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist, I help both men and women regain their core strength, address core dysfunction, and heal Diastasis Recti. After suffering from a severe case of Diastasis Recti following the birth of my three large babies, I continue to use the Tupler Technique® as the foundation for training clients and for my own rehabilitation journey.

I am determined to educate and provide a choice for those who suffer from Diastasis Recti and the associated challenges. The Tupler Technique® has been the cornerstone in positively changing my body, the way I exercise, and most importantly, how I live my life.
